Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 Suspend

Laptop,

Acer Aspire 5102 wlmi

4 GB RAM

120 GB Harddrive

And suspend to ram is finally working!

had to add this little file to /etc/pm/config.d/ to get the atheros wifi to get back up when resumed.

/etc/pm/config.d/defaults:

SUSPEND_MODULES=”ath_pci”

that did the trick.

I have installed the fglrx drivers via the System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers application, and I haven’t got the desktop effects enabled due to slower window drawing using these drivers compared to the default ones (ati? / radeon?).

Thanks to paulsiu for the information.

Update:

here is my config files for reference.

/etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module:

/etc/default/acpi-support:

http://pastebin.com/f3c99b2a1

/etc/pm/config.d/defaults:

http://pastebin.com/f2e58ab3c

Also, lspci output:

http://pastebin.com/f21cdcc67

And lsmod output:

EDIT: fixed typo.

Linux Mint ( and others )

Been using Linux Mint now for a few weeks, and everything is working great! Maybe even too great, fuck, I’m bored. That is bad, because when I get bored with a distro, it means it is usually time for a new one to try out… Lemmesee, Mandriva 2009 just got released, and Fedora 10 betas are out ( the nines didn’t work too well imo ), opensuse 11 is unstable as hell too. So that leaves me with Mint, wich is boring, but stable, Gentoo which I like but takes forever to set up with a slow PC.

graah…. must not install other OS….. must order more RAM for Virtual Machines instead ;-)

Windows Xp and ports

http://www.angryziber.com/w/FAQ:_Crippled_Windows:

However, especially on Windows platforms, the problem can also be caused by TCP connection rate limiting.

Starting from Windows XP SP2 (and on through Vista), Microsoft has crippled down consumer versions of Windows, officially in order to limit the possibilities of insecure Windows machines to act as hosts for Internet attacks executed by worms and trojans. Unfortunately, these changes also made non-server editions of Windows a lot less capable for doing network administrations tasks, such as scanning.

Windows implementation of TCP connection attempt rate limiting limits the number of simultaneous connection attempts to 10 on XP SP2 or 2 to 25, depending on the edition of Vista. The previous limit was over 65,000. You can check if you reach this limit by examining the Event Log after scanning: look for the Event ID 4226, which corresponds to this problem.

For scanning purposes, that means you can have at most this number of scanning threads if you want to get reliable results. The number of scanning threads affects the maximum number of hosts scanned simultaneously and therefore the maximum number of connections made at each moment.

Good to know.

Virtualbox > VMware.
Seamless integration is worth mentioning. And it’s fast!
